We’re Going to Win in Iraq March 27, 2007

I’ve said before that we’re probably going to win despite the Democrats’ best efforts, and it’s looking more and more likely. Every day the news from Iraq is getting a little more positive, and even the AP is having to start to show it.

The positive results are affecting the opinion of the war here at home. Instapundit, among others, is pointing out that in the last month there has been a 10% shift in what people think over the war. That’s pretty significant for one month. Give the troop surge a couple more months to stabalize Baghdad, and things should really start to look good.

The wild card to all of this, of course, is Iran. Iran was looking forward to a puppet state in Iraq, and has a great interest vested in not having Iraq succeed in forming a successful, stable Democracy. Right now the momentum is definitely in our direction and Iran would really have to try to successfully throw a wrench in things, but it’s not out of the question. We don’t want an open war with Iran, as a mountainous country it would be hellish to invade (although we could always just bomb it at our leisure), but sometime, most likely sooner than later, things with Iran will come to the head they’ve been building towards since the 1970s.

They’ll back down. They almost always do. If not, their navy remains vulerable, as do their Islands, their oil platforms, their few refineries and their entire Eastern and Western borders. The real threat (short of their getting nukes) is what will happen among the Sunni powers if we topple Tehran.
