Has very little to do with Al Qaeda – unlike most of the violence to do with the surge last year – That part of the war we’ve pretty much won. Instead, the violence has to do with Al Sadr, Iran, and the upcoming election later in the year.

Here’s an Iraqi’s take on the current situation, Here’s Michael Yon’s, and here’s an analysis based solely on the numbers.

In short, this is something we need to keep an eye on, because Iran’s influence and the sheer power of the more criminal elements of the Mahdi army does have a destabilizing potential, but this fight is not anything near the all out civil war that Al Qaeda almost triggered with their bombing – and if we stay on top of Al Qaeda, this fight seems likely to re-spiral into that sort of struggle. As several sources have pointed out, it is most analogous to the Feds fighting the Chicago mob in the last century.
