Pajamas Media has a report about how piracy along the horn of Africa is getting even worse. This isn’t really anything new, piracy is also a growing threat along the coast of southeast Asia. Unfortunately, the magnitude of the problem is so large that it’s hard to know how to deal with it. I for one favor arming cargo ships with pain rays and other non-lethal weapons that are automatically set to go off towards any vessel that gets too close to the ship, unless specifically disabled by the crew – but I would bet that even approaches like this will be quickly worked around by pirates. Armed guards on every ship would of course make them much safer, but how much more expensive would that make worldwide shipping?
