Since so much of our infrastructure is in critical condition. Essentially, our entire political class is failing us, and we’re failing to uphold them to the standards we need.
Privatization of our infrastructure could drastically help things, but publicly managed infrastructure also should be failing.

Only fools drive on that bridge anyway. Since before I moved out here 10 years ago they knew it would fall again in an earthquake and no one’s bothered to retrofit it. I don’t care *what* other issues they’ve had, they’re too short sighted to fix their stupid bridge up there, which is essential to the survival of the people who need to cross it.
I’ve been on it once, I think, because I was coming down from the Jelly belly factory, to Chez Panisse (in Berkeley), and our visitors then wanted to go across to Chinatown or something like that.
My aunt missed falling off the bridge by 10 minutes last time it fell. Is my avoidance of it a bit silly, considering the actual risk? Sure. But it’s still stupid not to fix it after all these years.
