Even after such an overhaul of an election, it seems only a sizable fraction of politicians got the message – and the rest almost certainly heard it, but are choosing to ignore it. Tea Partiers and their sympathizers care about nothing except for fiscal sobriety. America, just like so many European countries, is in deep trouble, and while there are lots of deeper financial reforms we could take, cutting the earmarks and pork is step one – because it shows that politicians are actually looking to stop enriching themselves and their political allies at the expense of the rest of us.
Many Republicans, and even some Democrats, are finally starting to understand just how frustrated most Americans are. And some, like McConnell, are slowly being convinced to give up their earmarking ways, but still not even enough Republicans are committed to the fight against pork to get a ban on earmarks through – although at least the Senate’s pork-filled omnibus bill got defeated. Maybe the earmark ban will go through after the lame duck session ends – but likely not. If not, we’ll continue to oust entire majorities until the politicians understand the situation. Some of them do. And we’re not fooled by politicians such as Obama and Cornyn who only seem to be fiscally responsible when it suits them.
So what was in that omnibus bill? Massive amounts of pork ($575 million per page), including quite a bit from Republicans – even though Democrats were literally 50 times worse. Republican Murkowski was going to pay her friends back 10 to 1. One Democrat Senator, Emanuel Cleaver, had a $48 Billion earmark to a personal friend – which he now denies doing, even though he still boasts of it on his website. Maybe the new Congress will stop bills like this. Maybe.
