A friend of mine linked me to an amusing political cartoon, which shows a man wearing a free tibet shirt and holding up a sign to boycott the Olympics. everything around the man, including the sign, shirt, and his American flag, are made in China. While the picture does convey an irony, I would point out that we do support China opening its market, capitalizing, and becoming a productive member of the world order, so it is not hypocritical to support China’s people by buying their products. At the same time, however, China’s government does do some fairly despicable acts, and both oppresses people supports the oppression of many others around the world. Letting China know that we dislike that aspect of its government but like other aspects is a perfectly reasonable stance to take.
